13 October 2013: Sunday, UUSMC service, garbage/recycling cleanup, Jane Frelick, Linda Pugh, Laurie Taylor Jackson, Susie Gough, Andy Levin ...

Got to church early for choir practice and the parking lot was empty but the garbage/recycling cans were overturned, garbage/paper strewn all over the grass and tall grass. Parked the car and spent about 15 minutes collecting and sorting the items back into their respective cans. Looked a lot better. As I walked toward the Church, Susie Gough arrived and a swoop of geese took off overhead like a row of bombers, startling but beautiful.

In the church, sat and listened to the singers prepare for today's service and did my FB. Got up and went into the kitchen and met Linda Pugh, a proud senior citizen who was filling in for an octogenarian who'd had a fall and was unable to do the coffee. She had a treat. She'd prepared a rich dessert of strawberry shortcake and had cream for the coffee. Her husband, a confirmed atheist, rarely attends but is retired from teaching HS English. I suggested and then sent to him a link for the movie with Danny Devito called Renaissance Man, where he teaches Shakespeare to hardened group of low-achieving military men.

Saw and spoke in length to Jane Frelick, who I adore, she is such a vibrant 90+ year old walking a bit jittery with a cane in each hand, recently returned from a wedding journey to D.C. for her granddaughter. All 5 of her children were there. Married to Robert, an iconic M.D., who introduced radiation oncology to the Wilmington area back in the 50s was trained in medicine, free of charge, by the military back in the WWII era. He did not serve in the armed services but became a doctor, a great one. In early 2014, the couple, one a rock hard Presbyterian, the other a Unitarian since 1930, will have been married 70 years.

Quick walk before Church around the block and then a longer one, after I prepared lunch for mom and dad, actually, for mom as dad only ate Tapioca pudding, not interested in the usual cheese/ham/tomato melt. They did each have tea. When done, Dancer and I took on Bark Park and walked right at 2 miles getting back to the car. She was off leash for a lot of the walk including in the picture below.

The afternoon was brilliant and Dancer's coat shone in the sunlight. (Here the zoom is being used and it is difficult to hold the camera steady.)

After service spoke to a wonderful singer, Laurie Jackson, who mentioned a group she performs with, the New Ark Chorale and I got info on contacts and bookmarked their web site. The director will be conducting his own piece, Missa Brevis, the next concert. I also friended her on Facebook.
