16 March 2015 ... my first entry? of the new year (come on) ... Liz' arrival ... meet the neighbor, Chris, finally ... call U of D parking authority, Wells Fargo debit card ...

So, here goes, after literally months of avoidance, I return to this blog and attempt, the day after, to begin a healthy process of recollection on a single day's activities, to gain some sort of perspective on this all-to-short human life. As I write this on St. Patrick's Day of 2015, a bright overcast day that will rise into the low 60s and as the grass has received a dosed of pre-emergent fertilizer from Nick, who knows Dancer and is greeted by her in the backyard as he takes the machine in rows and my darling

                                                              Not Nick, not the front
yard and not the machine used.

therapy dog is not fearful, only attendant and loving as always, I know that this is a start, like my horoscope spoke of, a way to break out of the morass of inaction (Christine Shaw leads yoga at the YMCA as I type this and I am not there, again, to enjoy her healthy, physical pedagogy and spiritual enlightenment and to tell her how much I enjoyed the Delaware Symphony Concert where her group sang the accompaniment to opera selections ... loved her "Toreador").

At long last, I made the trip across the street and introduced myself to the "new" neighbor who moved in at the end of last year, yes, that's right, over 3 months ago. His name is Bill and he is the son of a DHS grad of '75, Cherie (?) Smith, who grew up in Limestone Acres. His wife -- this is 2nd marriage for both of them -- is Nicole and she is due in April with their first child, a boy, but he has a son from his previous marriage, a boy who has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair-bound and will start school next year. The ebullient, singing child in the front yard, on occasion, is Avah, and their loving dog (name I can't recall). She came over and asked to ride her bike around the block. She is forthright, outgoing and just a dear.

1 March 2014: Norma (Virginia) Nyhoff's 24th birthday (also the bday of Frederic Chopin) ... mom getting hair done by Stacy at this typing (9:39 am) ...

I called this morning at 8 a.m. and got "Norma Nyhoff's" voicemail and then got mom to sing, rather off key but with passion, Happy Birthday to her granddaughter and wish her a happy birthday. I joined in and tried to harmonize with little success.
Norma is 24 today.....surrounded by family...... — with BrittJergenNorma Nyhoff and Seyla.

Another masterpiece from our multi-talented neighbor.

I'm happy as FedEx and the extraordinary service of Delaware Hospice continues with the delivery of meds to renew or supply. We have the necessary pain pills and also the heart medication, which I just called in yesterday, so the pill dispenser is filled for the next week. A good feeling.

27 February 2014: Thursday ... brilliant day but chill ... crescent moon and brilliant planet (?) this am in the eastern sky ... bday of Marion Anderson (1897) ... busy day with 800 calls but A LOT done ...

Today is the birthday of the famed contralto Marion Anderson, a fact elucidated by the keen intellect and FB aficionado, Loyd Dillon  (he texted me this evening after attending a tribute concert to Pete Seeger and spoke of the "religious experience" of listening to great artists, "Especially if we go back to the original meaning of the word "religion" -- a "binding together"). We exchanged some pleasantries as I mentioned her connection to dad's musical god Arturo Toscanini and how the maestro thought her voice "once in a century" quality. I even found a quotes page on the web site to the contralto with that particular quote listed.

Two, for a second time, group exercises today. Both were new to me. BodyVive in the morning with a new instructor for me, Pamela, where we worked out with stretch bands (I took one to taught and paid a price, they were difficult to stretch during the strength portion of the workout) and BodyAttack with the incomparable Renee who really gets you moving with a splendid exercise that she totally invests herself into and I felt, on my first go-round with the moves, totally out of synch with the music and my lack of timing. But I did sweat and feel total exhaustion. Afterward, had a great conversation with a splendid person and trainer, Carla, who I've taken BodyPump with on several occasions. She took the class with Renee and she is a former special ed teacher and is an RN, who worked in med/surg at Christiana for about 7 years before she had three kids -- two boys (one in college, the other HS) and a girl (13 years old). She is so dynamic and funny and just full of energy and warmth. She'd just gotten over a bout of illness and had missed teaching on Monday. I will have to get back to her class and develop this friendship. Out of a sense of comfort, I told her about meeting Katia and my date with her on Sunday. She is just someone you feel you can confide.

A few important and overdue 800 calls made today were rewarding. To summarize, quickly: called Bank of America credit card and cancelled dad's and got mom to call and request a detailed transaction list for 2013 and the taxes (in particular, what dad spent on prescriptions since he used his credit card at Pathmark and Walmart for his expensive insulin and other drugs for mom ... it could be quite significant ... it will cost a little less than $10 for the report, mom said put it on her credit card, which is still good through August of this year);  called Delaware Health and Social Service and now have Delaware Physicians, Inc. as my selected provider and I was able to choose Dr. David Maged as my preferred physician (he is on that service) ... it will start in early April and in the meantime, if I need medical treatment, I can use Medicaid (if I can find a physician, according to my doctor brother -- no sub-specialties in the Atlanta area accept Medicaid but it might be different for primary care); and called AAA and when I renew, I can change my club status from the Carolinas to the Delaware Chapter of the automobile association. It was a welcome and needed set of calls and it all worked out, thankfully.

23 January 2014: Thursday ... the chill continues ... to the Y twice today ... Flyers' losing streak reaches three ...

We got our medications, thankfully, dropped off, as usual, almost clandestinely and furtively on the front doorstep by FedEx and everything was there. Mom has her med for the coming week at least. Calls from Beth were most helpful.

Worked out at the Y this afternoon with weights and did a selection of available ones and had to modify my workout on the computer. Ended with the stair step machine and that kicks your butt. I made it to the top of Big Ben or 37 floors and was spent. It's hard work and of course, great cardio, if you can stand it.

Made it back to the "Y" for a primer by Jennifer Fawzi, a trained instructor in LesMills workouts (which I will take -- her class -- on Monday), in the early evening and it was quite helpful and instructive. Working out consistently has certainly been in her favor as she is fit, attractive and I would say, middle aged. She gave a thorough description of cycling and her own discipline of lifting weights during a workout with songs. The name eludes me at present, have brochures downstairs which I'm too lazy, or what the heck, it's called BODYPUMP and you use weights and lift in traditional poses but do extended reps. Should be interesting.

The walk tonight was another chill one and mom called me as I circumnavigated Mealey's Funeral Home about a need for morphine. Told her it would be about 30 minutes. I crossed the road, tentatively, as the cars come quickly and the snow is a dangerous deterrent, but I made it into Limestone Acres past the homes (probably moved by now) of the Snyders (Rocky and Jay) and the McCauley's (cannot recall his name, my age who always impressed me with doing his homework on the bus before he got home, oh Greg, and who I learned later in life was treated for a mental illness), and took the first street on the left, walked an extended block to Pickwick, turned left, crossed Limestone Road, again, with care back to 4546 for a total of 1.25 miles on the digifit app. A decent walk as I received the sole word -- "Congratulations" -- in a flat, officious tone from the iPhone female-voiced app.

So disappointing to watch the Flyers tonight play the Columbus Blue Jackets in Ohio. They went ahead 2-1 only to give up the next 4 goals and lose 5-2 to their former high-price signer goal, Sergei Bobrovsky, who is on an unbeaten streak as are the BJs this January. Not so with the Flyers.

30 December 2013: Monday ... the penultimate (a word I shared in a letter to Bobbi Stenstrom and her refulgent garden) day of 2013 ... mom used the Dutch oven to wash up and then change (she wants plastic next time) ...

Went to the USPS web site and amazingly typed in my 16-digit or so tracking number for the certified letter to Washington National Insurance in Carmel, Indiana, and it came up as delivered two days after sent immediately with a list of places the post visited along its journey from Delaware to Indiana. Remarkable.

Mom had a hankering for pizza today, I think instigated by a tv commercial or program that mentioned the food, so I got her order after mentioning that Art Steele had ordered a pepperoni pizza on the day he visited, Saturday, 7 December 2013, the day before dad's death, so mom ordered a pepperoni pizza on thin crust, not the pan that Art wanted, with mushrooms and extra cheese. I ordered it by phone from Domino's, the same place I'd gone before. It was cut into 6 pieces and I, rather egregiously, had half of the pizza, after having really had my lunch of a liverwurst sandwich with salad and tomato. Sometimes I have a ferocious appetite ... took my weight for the first time in a long time and came up with 208 with my shoes but I have lost no weight, but I am more muscular. It's the walking each night averaging about 2 miles. It really does make a difference.

Well it's done thanks to the Internet and a credit card, I am $842 plus change less rich after paying the TimeShare fees for another year. The following is our basic access info (login and password to the web site) and what we have for the year 2014:

I am bad at names but just figured out why. I don't practice. I composed a very late holiday card to the FamilyY of North Augusta this late afternoon (forgot to go to DMV to get my overdue Delaware driver's license) and when I went to thing about addressing it I used a collective word "Friends" rather than trying to list and obviously forget, many of the names. Well, I went to the Facebook page and collected some names that are beginning to fade and they include ... Dusty Rawlins, Dorothy Macafee, Zach, Cody, Janet Thornburg, Wendy from Canada, Wendy from the USA, Andrew Phan, Joseph, Cheryl Haughey, and others that I am sure to have forgotten like the paralyzed young man Holtzclaw, whose first name I forget, and my dear friend, the devoted Alabama fan, along with Carie Bugos, who moved to Savannah to work with her father and family.

Good walk tonight ... called Olivia at home and got her. Nice to touch base and share the story, again, about dad's passing and to learn of her trip to Florida to see her son and two teenage grandchildren. She has a total of 10 grandchildren from her three boys. It's always good to talk to her, she is a neat, independent woman who has always carried an animus for her ex-husband for some reason that I have never determined why. But we talked over my annoying Digifit app that speaks to me each 5-minute interval now ... the person I'm talking to can't hear it but I can.

Why am I staying up close to 1:00 a.m. Well, I'm watching a 3-3 hockey game between the Flyers and the Vancouver Canucks. The Flyers scored in the final 2 minutes with a man off the ice for the goalie to tie it. What a great game. They're in the overtime right now, five minutes and then they have the shootout. I think I'll stay up.

They WON it in a shootout, 4-3. Steve Mason, seen above, stopped all 3 penalty shots and Lecavalier scored the only goal necessary on the Canucks' goalie, Lack.
The time is 1:01 a.m. Time for beddy-bye.

22 May 2010: - Flyers, Farmhouse, Gail, asparagus, a Fall ...

The Flyers are up 3-1 over the Montreal Canadiens with an impressive 3-0 win, Michael Leighton's third shutout in this Eastern Final series (next round for the Stanley Cup). We had dinner at the Farmhouse (expensive @ over $260 w/tip for the French waiter - 8 years w/the restaurant - Bruno from Normandy, France) at the Loch Nairn Golf Course w/Gail Emerson, who looks older and appeared a little inebriated. She brought asparagus in her F250 Ford truck, a monster, with her Trixie-look-a-like Maggie in it.

The dog later beat a quick entrance into the Greathouse foyer and the ongoing dance for the wedding taking place there. The place was quite busy. Later, when we got home dad took a fall coming into the house and knocked over the lamp and plant and was upset/frustrated and uncomprehending as to how it happened (he had two martinis over the dinner).
